Author/Architect Jonathan Hale presents"Newburyport is a Work of Art" at the Custom House on Sunday, Oct. 28
Renowned author and architect Jonathan Hale renews his 40-year love affair with Newburyport on Sunday, October 28 with his illustrated presentation, “Newburyport is a Work of Art: Why its Architecture is Rare and Irreplaceable.” The program, sponsored by the Newburyport Preservation Trust, is at 4 p.m. at the Custom House Maritime Museum, Water Street, Newburyport.
Hale has written and lectured extensively about Newburyport in his work as a consultant to other cities across the country. His award-winning book, The Old Way of Seeing (1994), references Newburyport architecture and its composite streetscapes as examples of increasingly rare quality design and craftsmanship.
Hale’s presentation aims to be a practical guide, illustrated with photographs of Newburyport taken over the four decades he has visited and admired the city. He will take questions at the end of the program, as well as meet attendees at a reception to follow.
The presentation is from 4 to 5 p.m., followed by a reception. A $10 donation is requested at the door.
Hale has been the developer and architect of several historic property renovations in the Boston area, and has written design guidelines for new communities across the U.S. Based in Waltham, Mass., he holds degrees in architecture from Harvard University and the Boston Architectural College.
